Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
